In regards to my question about rest stop being redundant...in more recent travels I have realized that while I call them rest stops they are actually called rest areas, so no more pondering the question of redundancy.
Oh good. I was getting worried there wasnt a resolution. I pose a different question. How much did you rest at each area? Should they be called rest areas?

Maybe they are called rest areas because it would be impolite to call them what they really are.
